The year was 1987. The All Blacks had just won the inaugural Rugby World Cup, Bon Jovi were Livin’ on a Prayer, and a 19-year-old Mark Prosser — newly qualified and full of ambition — was setting out on his building career in North Canterbury. With a bold leap and an unwavering commitment to detail and excellence, Mark launched what would become one of Canterbury’s most respected luxury building companies. Together with his wife Melissa, the pair built a reputation for precision, craftsmanship, and trust.
Now, over 38 years later, Prosser Builders is proudly led by the next generation. Their son, Alex, has been at the helm for the past four years, bringing his own dedication to quality and a fresh perspective, while upholding the family’s high standards and passion for premium workmanship.
Although Mark and Melissa have taken more of a back seat, their support remains a cornerstone of the business. Melissa continues to be involved in the office, while Mark now takes on a mentoring role — always ready with guidance, advice, and the occasional delivery run for the team.
Today, we’re proud to be known as the architectural building company both architects and discerning clients trust when only the best will do. Our reputation for crafting luxury home developments in Christchurch and across Canterbury comes from our dedication to quality, detail, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
However, Prosser Builders’ is not just an architectural building company, our portfolio extends to custom renovations,including modern kitchen installations, a new bathrooms, extension work, etc…anything requiring skill and precision.

Raised in North Canterbury and schooled in Christchurch, Alex feels privileged that he had the opportunity to gain his apprenticeship under one of the best, DJ Hewitt Builders. Now, he gets to be one of the best, as Director and Owner/Operator of Prosser Builders.
Quietly unassuming, Alex’s unflappable approach to work and life ensures only the best for his clients and his team. Alex’s mother, Melissa, best sums up the qualities of this selfless young leader when she refers to the ‘flipping’ mullet he grew as a 20-year old. Legend has it the style originated among the fishmongers of Iceland who cultivated the style to keep their necks warm against the icy North Atlantic spray. Alex had no such excuse, but playing rugby for Glenmark, he and his teammates embraced the mudflap motif, embellishing it further with dangerously thin moustaches. Melissa was aghast. Alex proudly wore the mullet for his 21st birthday, the family photos forever tainted. However, soon after his birthday, Alex decided it was coming off…but rather than just getting a haircut, Alex selflessly devoted the occasion to a fundraiser for Bowel Cancer, shaving his hair and raising over $5,500 for the cause.

Delivery Boy, on hand mentor A solutions-based operator and a problem solver who thinks outside the square, Mark has always thrived on the difficult jobs. For over thirty-five years he has lived and breathed Prosser Builders, the face fronting this highly successful family business. These days Mark’s role looks a little different as he takes a back seat, excited to see son, Alex, take up the reins and shape Prosser Builders for the next generation.
Administrator
A chartered accountant by profession, Melissa laughingly refers to herself as ‘the chimney sweep.’ It’s a role she’s held since 1996, the behind-the-scenes matriarch with exceptional communication skills, an eye for detail and outstanding project management skills. Today, Melissa is on hand to provide professional mentoring to Alex.
